South African Triathlon Championships is always a highlight on the calendar and BIG goal for most athletes to get to. You need to qualify by doing your provincial trials and champs. The top 7 from each age group are generally picked (along with some other criteria). This year, because of Covid, all registered TSA members from Cape Unicity could apply for a spot on the team and depending on previous results could be selected.
The Embark athletes embraced this selection criteria and once the team was selected we had 13 athletes accepted to represent Cape Unicity (Western Province) at SA Tri Champs to be held in Bloemfontein on 20/21 March 2021.
These athletes fast tracked onto a specific program to build speed on the endurance they all had already! STeve Attwell ran this coached program for the athletes for 12 weeks leading the competition! Lots of shorter sharper sessions, mental and physical sessions, and open water swimming. By the time the weekend was close, the taper and rest was well received. The tour to Bloem was great, we drove down in convoy with 2 thirds of the team and the rest of the high flyers, did just that! We all stayed together as a team and in doing so we were able to do the reccie together, prep together and all hold our nerves together. Its was the Sprint on Saturday and the Olympic on Sunday and the events took part at the Masselsport Resort. (It was a no wetsuit swim, non drafting bike and a flat fast run).
It was an amazing weekend, we had great individual results but more than that was the chance to actually race again!! This was definitely the highlight!
This is how we did over the races. Congrats to the Embark members for an outstanding achievement in representing your province. We wish them luck for SA selection (soon to be released) to represent SA at the World Tri Champs later in the year!
