Isuzu Ironman 70.3 Mossel Bay 2025
Athlete Spotlight: Marilie Putter
Race Overview
There’s something special about taking on a first major triathlon challenge, and for Embark athlete Marilie Putter, the journey to the finish line at Ironman 70.3 Mossel Bay became about far more than just race day.
From the very beginning, the experience was built on growth, consistency, and community.
“I originally wanted to try triathlon on my own, but joining this club changed everything. By the end of the year, I found an amazing community that pushes you to your limits while still having fun.”
Training through the build-up to race day prepared Marilie not only physically, but mentally too — something that became incredibly important once the race started.

Race Morning
The start line atmosphere was a mix of excitement and emotion.
“Sentimental & stressful.”
Like many athletes stepping into a major event, the nerves were real, but the preparation done over months of training provided confidence when it mattered most.
The Swim
Conditions in the water were challenging, with rocky and intimidating conditions testing athletes early.
“The water was rocky and intimidating but I felt prepared even in those conditions.”
Preparation and consistency in training allowed Marilie to stay composed and trust the process despite the tough conditions.

The Bike
The bike course delivered everything athletes could ask for — rolling hills, changing weather, and long stretches that tested endurance and mindset.
“Come rain and shine and rolling hills I smiled the entire way, Cape Town prepares you for this route.”
The positivity and enjoyment throughout the ride reflected the confidence built through training and the support system surrounding the journey.
The Run
As always, the run became a true test of resilience.
“Difficult, humbling, something I want to come back to claim next year, but the support on route made it enjoyable.”
Even in the toughest moments, the atmosphere and encouragement along the course helped carry the experience forward.
Crossing the Finish Line
For many athletes, the finish line represents the ultimate moment. But sometimes the biggest realization comes afterwards.
“YES. But in all honesty the finish line made me realise it was all about the preparation.”
Marilie shared a powerful reflection on what the journey truly meant:
“I used to think finishing an Ironman 70.3 would feel like conquering the impossible. After a year with Embark, I crossed the finish line feeling somewhat capable, and honestly I was disappointed that the moment didn’t feel bigger.
But then I realised that was the point: The impossible had become normal.
Now I look forward to whatever challenge comes next. No matter how big.
Thank you, Embark and STeve.”

Final Thoughts
Ironman 70.3 Mossel Bay was more than just a race result. It was a reminder that consistency, community, and preparation can completely change what an athlete believes is possible.
At Embark, we’re incredibly proud of Marilie’s journey and excited to see what challenge comes next.
