Cape Ultra Triathlon 2022

The Cape Ultra Triathlon weekend of the 5th and 6th of March was combined with a training weekend away in Franschhoek. We kicked the weekend off with a ride from Franschhoek to Theewaterskloof Dam over the Franschhoek pass. We had loaded our swimming stuff into the Isuzu MuX and the branded vehicle supported us to the dam. On arrival we registered for the race the following day and grabbed a cup of coffee at the club house. A ride isn’t a ride until the coffee!! We then got ready to swim. A great 1km swim in the dam to the buoys and back before changing back into our cycling gear and riding back to Franschhoek for lunch in the town.

The athletes could now choose to drive back to Cape Town or stay the night in Franschhoek, or drive back to the dam and camp at the dam for the night.

Early Sunday morning we wracked our bikes and got ready to do the Sprint triathlon at 7:00 AM or the full distance ultra started at 7:30. It was a seeded swim start so the athletes entered the water according to their ability. It was a flatish open water swim and lucky no wind at all to make the water choppy. Once we exited the water we ran to transition for the bike leg. It was a bit of a lumpy ride but an easy ish non technical ride. Back to transition for T2 and onto the run.
The run is all off road and we weave through the fruit orchards for a 1 lap 5kms loop, or 3 lap 7km loop for the ultra disatnce. Its not technical, but did need focus while dodging the off roady uneven surface.

It's always a very welcoming finish line with the red carpet and music. As the athletes completed their race they gather under the Embark gazebo to exchange war stories and clap and cheer for the other athletes finishing.

The training weekend continued as the sprint athletes headed out for one more run to finish off the weekend. Depending what program the athletes are on dictated how far they had to run, and it varied from 4-6-8 km.

A fantastic weekend away, lots of memories, laugh and new medals! Congrats to all the triathletes who completed their first triathlon today!

We now move focus to the Cape Town Cycle Tour and Two Oceans half marathon and keep building on our fitness towards the Ironman Durban 70.3 in June. If you are interested in joining Embark and training with fun and social community please get in touch by clicking here
